Frames to suit… Apidea Expanded Polystyrene Mating Hives

Small moulded plastic frames to suit Apidea mating hives are injection moulded and can be easily snapped together. The two drawings below may contain slight errors, as they have been drawn from photographs that were not fully distinct (they will be corrected when I can measure actual examples).

The upper illustration is representative of the most recent production, the three parts involved are moulded with small bridges between the parts that should be trimmed with a sharp knife before assembly.

The older style is slightly more plain in design and is often moulded from plastic with a much lower degree of pigmentation. The two types are interchangeable.

Another type of frame that is suitable for use in the Apidea type of mating nuc is the unusual example folded from aluminium strip, that is shown on Jan Templeman’s website. As his site is written in Dutch, I have taken the liberty of redrawing his sketch and applying my version of the English translation.

The “[” & “]” shaped cuts should be made using a jeweler’s ‘piercing saw’ after drilling a small hole in one corner of the cut, to admit the blade. Then bend the aluminium and the lug will automatically be formed.

I have omitted the older diagram as it is some 20 years out of date.
